What is a Call Number?
Each book in the library has a unique call number. A call number is like an address: it tells us where the book is located in the library.
Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC system)
IFTM Library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification System to arrange books on the shelves. There are ten major subject groupings under the DDC system. Each of these is then divided and subdivided into more specific disciplines.
For example,
000-099 Generalities including Information and library science, computer sciences, general media, journalism & publishing, museology, general reference…etc.

| 500-599 Natural Sciences & Mathematics |
| 600-699 Technology (Applied Sciences) |

Read a call number line by line
For example, the call number for the “Marketing management” by Philip Kotler is:
658.8 KOT 2012 c.2
658.8 | Identifies that this book belongs to the category of Applied Sciences. Find the section where the call numbers begin 658 (this number is read as a whole number). Treat the rest as a decimal, e.g. 658.8 would come between 658.7 and 658.9. |
KOT | Author code, mainly based on the last name of the author. Within this section, the author codes are shelved alphabetically. |
2012 | publication date |
c.2 | Last Line: can be publication date, volume or copy number and/or other annotation. |
Tip: Because books are classified by subject, you can often find several helpful books on the same shelf, or nearby.
