PATA was founded in 1951. It is a non-profit association dedicated to enabling responsible development of the travel and tourism industry in the Asia-Pacific region. Its members in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond include 95 national or local government tourism bodies, 20 international airlines and airports, 70 institutions of education and 102 organisations in the field of hospitality.

IFT has been a member of PATA since the Institute was established in 1995. The association has twice presented IFT a PATA Gold Award in Education and Training.

There are 38 PATA Chapters and 20 PATA Student Chapters worldwide, including the PATA Macau Chapter and the PATA Macau Student Chapter. IFT holds the Vice-Chairmanship of the Supervisory Board of the PATA Macau Chapter.

IFT and PATA are long-term collaborators on matters to do with education in the fields of tourism and hospitality. The Institute has hosted the PATA Youth Symposium twice, in 2010 and 2017. The symposium is designed to enable tertiary students and young people qualified to work in the tourism industry the opportunity to engage with industry leaders.

IFT has a training hotel, the Pousada de Mong-Há, and in 2015 the hotel’s Director Dr. Helena Lo received the PATA Face of the Future Award, given to enterprising young people working in tourism.
