IFTM alumnus Mr. Joe Yang has won the prestigious Stelliers Greater China Sommelier/Mixologist – Hotelier of the Year award for 2019. The accolade was announced on 8 November at a gala ceremony at the Four Seasons Hotel Macao in Cotai.

The Stelliers Greater China awards were once known as The Hotelier Awards Greater China. The awards recognise excellence in 19 categories of occupations in the hospitality industry in Greater China.

Mr. Yang is the Head Sommelier at the Altira Macau hotel on Taipa. The progress of his career as a sommelier has earned him international recognition. Three years ago he was joint second in the final of the 2016 Wines of South Africa International Sommelier Cup competition. The contest is held every 3 years, testing each contestant’s knowledge of South African wines. Mr. Yang carried the banner for Asia, having won the Asian semi-final of the competition in Hong Kong.

Mr. Yang graduated from IFTM in 2009 with a degree in Hotel Management. He said in an interview from 2016 that studying at the Institute allowed him to discover his thirst for knowledge about wine. While an undergraduate, he took a chance to take part in the IFTM Student Union Wine Appreciation Club, which further involved him in the world of wine.
