IFTM Culinary Arts Management students shine at Macao’s 2023 Young Chef Competition

中文摘要 / Summary in Chinese
This year’s edition of Macao’s Young Chef Competition saw IFTM student Nick Yiu Tin Ian secure second place. His contest success was another example of how IFTM extracurricular activities can help undergraduates to advance their knowledge and sharpen their skills

IFTM student Nick Yiu Tin Ian showcased his culinary prowess by securing the runner-up position in the 2023 Young Chef Competition, organised by the Macau Culinary Association.

The contest had a total of 10 finalists. Three other IFTM undergraduates – Eva Leong I Lam, Johnny Ieong Man Kin, and Jennie Huang Wenyi – were all placed joint third.

The culinary showdown provided a chance for the budding chefs to gain valuable insights into the culinary sector and elevate their skills.

The results announcement and awards ceremony took place at a charity dinner at the Sheraton Grand Macao hotel on 20 October, hosted by the Macau Culinary Association.

The association’s contests, including the Young Chef Competition, aim to encourage emerging talent, while also contributing to the overall growth of the city’s culinary sector. The events create a platform for aspiring chefs to refine their skills, explore their creativity, and connect with industry professionals.

Under the Young Chef Competition’s rules, each participant had 120 minutes to create a 3-course meal, consisting of a seafood-based starter, a main course featuring lamb, and a fruit-based dessert. Two servings of each course were requested of the participants by the judges: one for them to taste and assess flavours, and one to be reviewed in terms of presentation.

The upper age limit for participants was 24 years.

IFTM encourages students to be involved in extracurricular contests. In this way the Culinary Arts Management Programme not only supports students to explore their passions, but also helps them advance their skills.
