Students help plan launch of automated egg waffle machine

中文摘要 / Summary in Chinese

Egg waffles are a favourite among fans of street food in Macao and Hong Kong. Macao companies mbox Co Ltd and Robi3 Macau Co Ltd are working together to elevate the humble snack to new heights by developing a vending machine that cooks and sells the snack.

Students in IFTM’s Tourism Retail and Marketing Management Bachelor Degree Programme completed a consulting project in the second semester of academic year 2019/20 to help the developers prepare the machine’s launch.

The project formed part of the students’ course requirements and was designed by IFTM Assistant Professor Dr. Fernando Lourenço. The project offered students a chance to apply what they had learned in class to a task in the real world, and to gain hands-on experience of entrepreneurship.

The students were asked to conduct an in-depth market and industry analysis for the vending machine’s launch, to find business opportunities and identify target consumer segments. On the basis of their research, IFTM students proposed business models and marketing strategies for each opportunity in each market segment.

Mr. Lap Chan and Ms. Judy Wong, from the partnership developing the machine to make egg waffles, both said they were very satisfied with the analysis and proposals developed by the students. The proposals were considered to be innovative and feasible. Both said the consulting project would contribute to the success of the machine’s launch.

While working on the project, the students had to cope with an unexpected obstacle: precautions against the Covid-19 pandemic prevented physical attendance at classes. The students showed flexibility in adapting to the new and challenging circumstances. They finished the project by using videoconferencing and other ways of working together online.
