Students organise staycation activity for IFTM alumni to strengthen links on both sides

中文摘要 / Summary in Chinese

A 2-day staycation activity, targeting IFTM alumni and their families, took place in late April at the Educational Hotel Pousada de Mong-Há. “IFTM Alumnication 2022_Travels the Yore” was organised by a group of Year 2 students enrolled on the English-language stream of the Tourism Event Management Bachelor’s Degree Programme.

The event aimed to strengthen ties between IFTM alumni and their alma mater, providing alumni – and their families – with a relaxing weekend and fun on-campus activities.

In previous academic years, students on the Tourism Event Management programme had hosted banquets for alumni. This year, the undergraduates decided to arrange a special programme, including not just a staycation at Pousada de Mong-Há, but also other elements, namely an alumni celebratory dinner, family photo sessions, craft and baking workshops, and a gigantic Monopoly game.

The staycation activity was part of the students’ coursework for their bachelor’s degree programme. The project was supervised by IFTM Lecturer Mr. Billy Im Ut Lon, and aimed at giving undergraduates the knowledge and practical skills required to plan, organise and hold events. The importance of project management and on-site implementation was highlighted throughout the activity, from planning to budgeting, seeking sponsorship, venue setup and providing service.

The student-organised hands-on project was part of IFTM’s established, innovative approach to teaching, whereby theory and practice are integrated. The curriculum at the Institute emphasises project-based learning. Students are invited to experience real situations and confront real challenges by undertaking hands-on projects, thereby developing cross-curricular skills, while collaborating in groups.

Support for the “IFTM Alumnication 2022_Travels the Yore” activity was provided by Lecturer Ms. Marieta Wong, from the Culinary Arts Management Bachelor’s Degree Programme, as well as by Year 4 students from that programme, and members of the IFTM Culinary Arts Club.

The net proceeds of the event will be donated to Sheng Kung Hui Macau Social Services Coordination Office, to support its community services.
